Red Lion Removals van outside a Cardiff home ready for moving day

Your Moving House Checklist for Cardiff

Moving house is busy. There is no getting around that. There are calls to make, boxes to pack, people to notify, and about a dozen things you will only remember at 11 pm the night before you move.

But here is the thing: with the right checklist and a team who knows Cardiff, it is very manageable.

We have helped hundreds of Cardiff families move home. We know the streets, the access challenges, the parking quirks, and the local details that most generic moving guides miss completely. This checklist covers everything you need to do, in the order you need to do it, with the Cardiff-specific steps that actually make a difference on moving day. For a broader overview of moving home, take a look at our moving home guide too.

Work through it stage by stage. Tick things off as you go. And when you get to the bit about booking your removal company, you know where we are.

Eight Weeks Before Your Cardiff Move

Eight weeks feels like a long time. It is not. Not in Cardiff, not in the middle of peak moving season.

July is historically the busiest month for moves in Wales. September brings the Cathays and Roath student changeover. Fridays and month-end dates go first. If you want a good crew, a good van, and a date that actually suits you, eight weeks is when you start.

Here is what to do now:

  • Book your removal company. This is the single most important task on the list. The earlier you book, the better your choice of date, time, and team.
  • Book a free video survey, not a phone estimate. A proper survey takes around 20 minutes and gives you an accurate, itemised quote. A phone estimate is a guess. Find out more about how removal costs in Cardiff are calculated here.
  • Start decluttering room by room. Less to move means less to pack, load, and unload. It also means a lower quote.
  • Get at least two survey-based quotes so you can compare like for like.
  • If you are both buying and selling, instruct your solicitor now to avoid further delays down the line.

Red Lion Removals offers free no-obligation video surveys for all Cardiff moves. Book yours at calendly.com/redlionremovals/video-survey or call us on 02920 755 862. You do not need a confirmed completion date to book a survey.

Four to Six Weeks Before Your Cardiff Move

Things are starting to feel more real. Solicitors are moving. Dates are emerging. Now is the time to sort the Cardiff-specific details that catch people out.

  • Confirm your moving date with your removal company as soon as solicitors advise. Do not wait until the exchange.
  • Are you moving to or from a controlled parking zone? Cathays, Plasnewydd, and Butetown all require a trade waiver through Cardiff Council before moving day so the removal van can park close to your door. This is your responsibility to arrange, not ours. In the busiest zones, a one-day waiver costs £10. Do not leave this until the week of the move.
  • Moving near the city centre? Check the Principality Stadium events calendar before you confirm your date. On match days and concert days, roads close early and loading bays disappear. A Friday move that clashes with a big event can add hours to your day.
  • Order your packing materials now: boxes in various sizes, bubble wrap, wardrobe boxes, packing tape, markers. Our house move packing guide covers exactly what you need and how to use it.
  • Decide whether you want a professional packing service. If you do, book it now. It is added to the same slot as your removal, and it books up at the same rate.
  • If there is likely to be a gap between moving out and moving in, arrange secure storage now rather than scrambling later.
  • Note: Red Lion Removals does not provide appliance disconnection, piano moves, or garden shed clearance. If you need any of these, arrange them separately before your moving date.

Two Weeks Before Your Cardiff Move

Two weeks out is when the admin gets serious. This is the stage most people underestimate. It is not glamorous, but getting it right saves a lot of stress later.

  • Start packing non-essentials: books, seasonal clothing, decorations, rarely used kitchen equipment. Label every box with its contents and the room it belongs to. In the future, you will be very grateful you did.
  • Notify your energy suppliers (gas and electricity) of your moving date and new address. Give at least 48 hours' notice.
  • Notify your water supplier. If you have a water meter, give at least five working days' notice for a final meter reading.
  • Set up Royal Mail postal redirection at royalmail.com. It takes up to five working days to activate. Do not leave this until moving week.
  • Update your DVLA driving licence address now, before you move. Then update your V5C vehicle registration document within two weeks of your move date. Under 2026 rules, a mismatch between the two can result in a £1,000 fine.
  • Notify: bank and building society, employer (payslips and HR records), pension providers, credit cards, HMRC, GP, dentist, and any subscriptions or memberships.
  • If you have children moving to a new catchment area, contact the local authority admissions team as early as possible. School places can be difficult to secure mid-year.
  • If you have pets, update their microchip database record. This is a legal requirement after any address change. Failure to update may result in a £500 penalty.
  • Are you renting? Under the Renters' Rights Act (Wales, May 2026), you must give your landlord two months' written notice before moving out. Your Council Tax liability runs to the end of that notice period, even if you vacate earlier.

The Week Before Your Cardiff Move

One week to go. The end is in sight. Stay focused, and you will arrive on moving day ready rather than panicked.

  • Check the Cardiff events calendar for your moving date. Any Principality Stadium events? Confirm your route is clear.
  • Plan your start time. Cardiff's A470 builds up significantly from around 4 pm. For any north Cardiff move, an early start means you avoid that entirely.
  • Confirm all arrangements with your removal company: arrival time, both property addresses, access details, and any parking or lift arrangements at either end.
  • Defrost your freezer. This needs 24 to 48 hours before moving day. A freezer that has not been defrosted cannot be transported safely.
  • Drain your washing machine hoses and dishwasher hoses if they are coming with you.
  • Disassemble any large furniture that needs to be flat-packed for the move: bed frames, wardrobes, large shelving units.
  • Pack your essentials box and keep it clearly separate from all other boxes. This box travels in your car, not in the van. More on this in the moving day section below.
  • Do a room-by-room check: take photographs of the meter readings, remove wall fixings, and check the loft, garage, shed, and under the stairs. Nothing should be left.

Moving Day in Cardiff

The day is here. You have planned well. Now let the team do their job while you focus on the things only you can do.

Your essentials box travels in your car. Not in the van. Pack it with everything you will need in the first 24 hours: kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, phone chargers, medications, important documents (passports, mortgage paperwork, keys), toilet roll, a change of clothes for each person, and some snacks for the team. This box means you are never hunting through 30 boxes for a phone charger at midnight.

  • Start as early as your keys allow. Completion day keys are often available from around 11 am. Loading can usually begin before that.
  • Cardiff Bay move? Confirm your service bay booking and timed lift slot with building management the night before. Have your building's move-in documentation ready to hand to the team.
  • Cathays or Roath terrace? The team knows the access. Steep stairs, narrow hallways, and tight turns are all part of the job. Trust them.
  • Take meter readings at both properties, photographs with timestamps, as soon as you arrive and before you leave.
  • Do a full final walkthrough before the van leaves your old property: every room, every cupboard, the loft, the garage, the garden. Do not assume it has all been done.
  • At the new property, check that everything has been unloaded and that nothing is missing or damaged. Photograph anything you are concerned about immediately.
  • For a detailed breakdown of exactly what happens on moving day, see our moving day checklist.

If your completion is delayed or your chain falls through at the last minute, call us as soon as you know. We will do everything we can to accommodate a rescheduled date. And if you need short-term storage while you wait for keys, we can help with that too. Find out about our Cardiff storage options here.

After Your Cardiff Move

You are in. The boxes are everywhere, and the kettle is already on. But there are a few important tasks that need to be done in the first few days and weeks. Do not let these slip.

  • Notify Cardiff Council. Go to cardiff.gov.uk/ctaxchangeaddress and complete the relevant form. There are three separate forms: move into Cardiff, move out of Cardiff, and move within Cardiff. All are online. Do this promptly to avoid paying Council Tax at an address you no longer occupy.
  • Register to vote at your new address at gov.uk/register-to-vote. This matters for your credit rating as well as your civic rights.
  • Update your V5C vehicle registration document with the DVLA within two weeks. A mismatch between your V5C and your driving licence under 2026 rules carries a potential £1,000 fine.
  • Register with a new GP if you have moved to a different practice area. Do this sooner rather than later.
  • Book your broadband connection if you have not already. Allow two to four weeks for a new installation in Cardiff.
  • Notify TV Licensing of your new address. You may be eligible for a partial refund if your licence runs beyond your old address.
  • Update your home, car, and contents insurance with your new address and property details.
  • Introduce yourself to your neighbours. Cardiff people are, in our experience, very friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions — Moving House Checklist Cardiff

How far in advance should I book a removal company in Cardiff?

During the peak season of April to August, book your Cardiff removal company at least four to six weeks before your intended moving date. July is historically the busiest month for moves in Wales, and September is also busy in Cathays and Roath due to the student changeover period. For a Friday or month-end move during peak season, book as early as you can. Red Lion Removals offers free video surveys before your completion date is confirmed, so you can get booked in and hold a provisional date while your purchase progresses.

Do I need to notify Cardiff Council when I move house?

Yes. You need to inform Cardiff Council about your change of address for Council Tax purposes as soon as you move. There are three separate online forms available at cardiff.gov.uk/ctaxchangeaddress: one for moving into Cardiff, one for moving out of Cardiff, and one for moving between Cardiff properties. Do this promptly after your completion date to avoid paying Council Tax at an address you no longer live at, or missing a bill at your new one.

Do I need a parking permit for my removal van in Cardiff?

In some parts of Cardiff, yes. Areas including Cathays, Plasnewydd, and Butetown are controlled parking zones where a trade waiver must be arranged with Cardiff Council before moving day. This is the homeowner's or tenant's responsibility, not the removal company's. In the busiest zones, a one-day waiver costs £10. If a waiver is not arranged and the van cannot park close to your property, the move will take longer and may cost more. Check your postcode before moving day.

What should I pack in my moving day essentials box?

Your essentials box should travel in your car, not in the removal van. Pack anything you will need in the first 24 hours: kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, phone chargers, medications, important documents such as passports and mortgage paperwork, toilet roll, and a change of clothes for each person. If you have young children, add a favourite toy and something to keep them occupied while you wait for the keys. Keep this box clearly labelled and physically separate from everything else being loaded.

What is the best time of day to start a Cardiff house move?

Start as early as your completion keys allow. Most Cardiff completions start around 11 am, but loading at your current property often begins before then. For any move involving the A470 or north Cardiff routes, plan to be finished or on your way by early afternoon at the latest. Cardiff's main arterial road builds up significantly from around 4 pm. Always check the Principality Stadium events calendar before finalising a city centre moving date. A match or concert can close roads early and add hours to your day.

What often gets forgotten when moving house in Cardiff?

Several things come up time and again. Updating the V5C vehicle registration document with the DVLA within two weeks of moving (a mismatch with your driving licence can carry a £1,000 fine under 2026 rules). Updating a pet's microchip database record, which is a legal requirement after any address change and carries a potential £500 penalty if missed. Defrost the freezer 24 to 48 hours before moving day. Setting up Royal Mail postal redirection before moving week, as it can take up to 5 working days to activate. And booking broadband at the new property well before your completion date.
